Online Climate Activism Highlight (USA)

If you live in the USA then you probably already know about the current battle over clean air legislation. If not, here is a summary.

One of the more interesting facts about the clean air act is it's economic payoff:

"The Clean Air Act is widely considered one of the most effective environmental laws ever passed.

In fact, it provides $30 in health benefits for every dollar invested in pollution controls."

Special interests have their reasons for opposing legislation but the common good is overwhelmingly best surved by  keeping a lid on polloution.

 Here is a online petition with >175'000 signatures where you can show your support for implementing the clean air act.

Just to say that i have signed my name on to this, i think that it is a really good idea. I`m hopefull that others will feel the same and that this will take off.

Recently several people have made the case for an emergency agenda on climate change. Moving this whole issue back from 2050 to 2008. The govornment keep wondering why people wont change their behaviour--isnt the rehtoric strong enought!? But that is preciesly the point, thegovornment has done nothing to suggest that the war on climate change is infact even real. Where are the troops, where are the resources for us to take this on together. In short,. where is the leadership that would encourage solidarity?

I would like to see Gordon Brown give this address to start just such a campaign. Please pass on the email bellow and mention it on any websites/blogs/myspace pages that you may have.

Greenpeace Video For Bali Climate Talks

Greenpeace have launched a video collaboration designed to creatively send a message to the crucial UN climate change conference coming up in December. The 'message in a bottle' video will consist of short clips submited to the greenpeace introduction video, the idea is to make a sort clip where you creatively pass on the message in a bottle in a climate change themed way.


This idea was inspired by the recent google video about sending an email so look here for an idea of what is expected; just add the climate change theme.

The aim of the video is to send a clear message with a demand for "Real Action" to tackle climate change, at the UN meeting taking place in Bali, Indonesia, where governments will agree their next round of emission cuts under the Kyoto Protocol.

We are asking people all over the world to submit video responses to "Message in Bottle" to show delegates that the world is watching them, and expects nothing less than a clear mandate to tackle climate change.

Greenpeace posted a short promo on youtube and all you have to do to enter is post a video response...short and creative videos stand the best chance of making the final edit.

e-action: Help the WWF pressure for a strong climate bill.

Ask your MP for a Climate Change Bill that works

There are a number of things the Bill must do for it to be effective and perhaps the most important is the UK's overall CO2 emissions reduction target.

The government thinks a 60% reduction by 2050 is a reasonable target, but this is based on old science. The current science tells us that countries like the UK need to cut emissions by at least 80% to deliver our fair share of the carbon clear-up. And WWF research shows that an 80% reduction by 2050 is entirely achievable.

The difference between a 60% and an 80% target is the difference between a Bill which rises to the climate change challenge, and one which simply ducks it. Only with an 80% emissions reduction target can we hope to prevent the worst effects of climate change.

Tell your MP that the Climate Change Bill must be strong enough to be effective.

e-action: amazonian dam project threatens bolivian biodiversity

The Brazilian government is planning two huge dams on the Madeira River, principal tributary of the Amazon, and a region of mega-biodiversity, with 750 fish and 800 bird species.

The dams were granted preliminary approval in July by Brazilian environmental authorities, even after technical experts of the Brazilian environmental protection service Ibama recommended against licensing the project without new studies being carried out.

The Bolivian government have protested, and on August 23rd a decision was made to form 3 bi-national working groups to study the dams' potential impacts on Bolivia.

We need your help - visit our website and sign the petition organised by IRN, Friends of the Earth Brazil & Amazonia Brasileira, and let the Brazilian government know that this is a matter of concern to the international community.

Email Action Alert: Biofuels, Land Confiscation, And Murder in Columbia

An urgent e-action from biofuelwatch...

There is a new email action alert on Climate Ark calling on the Colombian government to protect the rights of Afro-Caribbean, indigenous and other peasant communities and the country's rainforests against palm oil expansion, which is happening mainly to serve the growing global biofuel market. This alert was written jointly with the Colombian Inter-Church Commission for Justice and Peace, following a seminar in Bogota in August

Colombia is embarking on an aggressive biofuel and palm oil expansion programme, which is threatening communities and some of the most bio diverse ecosystems on earth. One of my colleagues from Biofuelwatch took part in the seminar and in a visit to one of the palm oil areas (Curvarado) last month.

This is land which legally belongs to Afro-Caribbean communities. Those people became refugees in the late 1990s, due to severe violence and repression from state forces. 113 killings have been documented. When they returned to their land, they found much of it planted with oil palms. They have cut down some of the oil palms to grow food now and are trying to set up 'biodiversity zones', but they live in constant fear of state forces and paramilitaries who work hand in hand with the palm oil companies.

There is a good article by a member of the World Rainforest Movement who also took part in the seminar and visit - you can find it at www.wrm.org.uy (click on 'Bulletin' on the left hand side and then on the article about Colombia).

The author says:

"There are few places in the world where oil palm trees are tainted with as much blood as in Curvaradó and the only way of starting to repair the outrages committed is for the Government to legally recognize these communities' rights to their lands."

E-Action: Say no to new coal!

Please take a minute out of your hectic schedule reading green blogs to object to new coal in the UK.

The Standard letter that you can send at the link above reads as follows, note you can add your own personal concerns to leave out certain points. This is just the basic letter.

Dear Sir/Madame,

I would like to register my opposition to proposals from the energy utility EON to build two new coal fired boilers at Kingsnorth in North Kent. I am concerned about the negative contribution this plant will make to our efforts to tackle the threat of climate change, which is now overwhelmingly accepted as the greatest threat facing humankind.I am opposed to the Kingsnorth proposals because:

- If built, the plant will emit around 4.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide every year - more than the combined amount of the 24 smallest emitting countries - seriously jeopardising our chances of meeting our national carbon reduction targets.

- As the 7th largest emitter of carbon dioxide and the 5th biggest economy in the world, the UK has a responsibility to lead the way in the efforts to tackle climate change. Building new coal fired power stations that are barely more efficient than the old ones at this crucial point will lead the world in entirely the wrong direction.- Approval of this plant would represent a continuation of our outdated, inefficient centralised energy system that allows two thirds of the energy that could be used to be wasted in the form of heat at the power station.

- Approval of this plant will undermine the necessary transition to a decentralised energy system that promotes renewable energy, energy efficiency and efficient use of fossil fuels.The simplest, cheapest and most effective way we can meet our energy needs whilst tackling climate change is to reform the way we produce and distribute power. We need an energy system that is decentralised - where heat and electricity is generated close to where it is needed, so that we can capture the heat normally wasted in order to heat our homes and provide hot water.

Please help to save the rainforests & peatlands (2 minute e-action)

Dear friends,

On 6th and 7th of May, ministers from Europe and elsewhere will be meeting in Kyoto for the 40th AGM of the Asian Development Bank. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) have a long record of financing rainforest destruction for palm oil plantations in Indonesia. They are thinking of massively expanding their funding for palm oil and other destructive monocultures through their 'renewable energy budget'. Palm oil and other biofuels grown at the expense of rainforests and other ecosystems, local communities and food production are not renewable energy. ADB are already a major contributor to global warming by financing new fossil fuel power stations and exploration across Asia, and by financing deforestation. Global warming is a threat to all rainforests. Please write to ministers now to demand that ADB must fund neither biofuel expansion nor fossil fuels. Many thanks.

Help with a response to the UK Climate Change Bill Consultation

I am currently filling in my response to the Draft Climate Change Bill 2007 (UK).

I would be interested in collaborating with anyone else who is already doing this or who would be willing to offer advice if to time constrained to take on this themselves. The bill is fairly complex and another head working on this would be great.

The main gaping holes that I have found so far are:

1. An inadequate target + language that may inhibit this being updated.
2. Excluding aviation and shipping; this is probably this single greatest mistake.
3. Having 5 year budgetary periods that are not legally binding rather than legally binding annual targets.
4. Excluding non-co2 GHG's.
5. Including the possibility of purchasing credits from abroad.

Ban Illegal Timber: Preserve the climate and the planets biodiversity.

International — If you buy or sell pirate DVDs you would be breaking the law. You could face a fine or even get jail time. But when companies in Europe buy or sell illegal timber from the last of the world's ancient forests they won't even have the timber confiscated.

So even though you can't watch a pirate copy of the latest Stephen King horror movie, the real horror is happening all around you as mountains of illegal and destructively logged timber flood onto the world's timber market.

That's because there are no laws to stop illegal timber or timber products from ending up in your local stores or home.

Everything from paper products to furniture or plywood could be made from illegal and destructively logged timber. When you purchase these products it could result in the loss of habitat and death for many unique and endangered species as well as contributing to a chain of human rights violations in forests around the world.

Europe plays a key role in fuelling demand for timber products, as it is one of the world's largest users of timber. But Europe has no law to stop the flood of illegal and destructively logged timber entering the market.

We want to see that change.

"We want laws to ban illegal and destructively logged timber from being sold in Europe and so do more than 160 other environmental, labour, and human rights organisations. 80 companies have also asked for legislation to outlaw illegal
timber. You too have the right to say that things must change."

The European Commission is asking what the public, timber industry and politicians think about the best way to stop the flood of illegal and destructive timber that pours into Europe each day. So we've made it nice and easy for you to tell them, 'Ban illegal timber'.

Planet Positive: Smart Ideas Shared

I have just returned from London where apart from meeting up with some good friends, I attended the inaugural meeting of Planet Positive.

The event was basically an opportunity to network with a lot of interesting people, but I would argue that some definite concrete actions will come of this; the event was also both salutary and inspiring.

Bellow i will add a few notes on my thoughts/involvement with the people and organisations. Any of the people there could do the same and highlight an entirely different set of connections and ideas from the meetings.

Last year the largest coal fired power station in the UK (Drax) was targeted by the Camp for Climate Action. Roughly 500 people attend, this year the first meeting had around 100 participants and with the interest from last years media attention a doubling of numbers for the camp would--i think--be conservative. Apparently, a Londoner who hollidays in Scotland has managed to build quite a campaign against a scottish windfarm. I live in scotland and have had a similar experiance with a related group based in England and pretending to represent the people.

Sign petition to support contraction and convergence and carbon rationing.

The petition is on the 10 Downing Street website, please sign it if you live in the uk and make it clear that there is support for these measures.

"The best indicator of whether a person truly grasps the scale of the global climate crisis is not wether they drive a hybrid car or offset their flightd, nor wether they subscribe to the Ecologist or plan to attach a wind turbine to their house. The most reliable indicator is whether they support carbon rationing."

The petition states that:

1. We believe Climate Change is one of the most serious threats to mankind, and to biodiversity on this planet, and that rapid action is required.

2. We believe, we need a global cut in emissions of 60% by 2030, and that this is likely to require a 90% cut in UK emissions by 2030.

3. We believe, the fundamental international framework that can deliver these cuts is Contraction and Convergence. We urge the government to campaign tirelessly at an international level for the adoption of Contraction and Convergence. We believe this approach of sharing emssions fairly per capita worldwide, and a process of aligning all nations to that is vital.

4. We believe that supporting C&C in the UK requires adoption of carbon rationing, with a tradeable ability, not green taxation.

5. We believe, green taxation will alienate much of society and will be unpopular with many of the people whose emissions we seek to lower. Green taxes will hurt poorer people more than the rich. Green taxes will not enforce reductions. Green taxes take away personal choice in how we live our lives.

6. We believe, by implementing carbon rationing with binding targets we can force the country to only use its share, rewarding those who have spare ration, and allowing an element of personal choice in how a person spends their ration.

7. We believe, we must implement rationing with a trading ability as otherwise there will simply be a black market.

8. We believe, carbon rationing can bring personal and business emissions within an overall target and ensure fairness between interests of corporations and citizens.

9. We believe supporting these frameworks we need incentives for energy efficiency in the household, and for the use of renewable energy sources.

10. We believe we need regulation for businesses to drive changes in fuel consumption, energy efficiency, food miles etc.

Wind farm NIMBYism alive and well in UK

Back in 2004 when there wasn't much happening on the Greenpeace front, the heroic Shaun (Area Networker for Essex) led a heroic charge into Kent to mobilise people to campaign on behalf of the Thames Array windfarm.

Loads of letter's got signed, lots of fun was had and the London, Essex & Kent networks combined to support what promises to be the UK's largest Offshore Windfarm

That development is now under threat as a bunch of NIMBY's in Swale have rejected planning permission for the onshore substation.

If you would like to take action to do something about this.

1) Go to the greenpeace website and take e-action. (about 30 seconds work)

2) Organise a day trip to Swale to campaign to get the Council to change it's mind. Use the above email to run off some letters, print up some petitions whatever.

3) If you think the Thames Array is relevant to Londoners, get out on the streets of London to get stuff done? or if you're out anyway on a Decentralised Energy stall, why not takes some too.

4) Drop me an email, and I'll pull some events together

E-Action of the Week

Hello all, this weeks E-action

First, an urgent action alert before the Kyoto talks in Nairobi. Please go to Climate Ark and take part in a joint biofuelwatch/climate ark action - it will only take you a couple of minutes.

As hundreds of peat and forest fires are burning across Borneo and Sumatra, we can expect over a billion tons of carbon to go up in smoke in just a few months.

This is one of the major sources of greenhouse gas emissions, and it has been ignored by the international community, and by many NGOs. Time is running out for Indonesia's forests and peat, and they contain nearly as much carbon as the Amazon rainforest.

If you could copy this into an email and forward it to other that would be great.

Second, you might also want to write to one of our power companies contemplating the use of palm oil as biomass under the Renewables Obligation.

It provides low jargon science news reviews without simplifying stories so much that they become meaningless. Many of the major stories about climate change reach the public domain through NS so it does a great job. However they do accept advertising from some non to climate friendly businesses. This person suggests that we write and express out views on this...i have done, my letter is here. It's a five minute job to write a basic e-mail, please do!

"New Scientist magazine regularly reports and features the results and outcomes of climate change, However, I have noticed that the magazine regularly promotes high polluting cars and air travel. This is hypocritical in my view.

I have written to them regarding this issue, but I feel my loan voice will have little impact on changing their policy.

My view is that if a major worldwide voice for the scientific community can't resist the financial lure of promoting high polluting corporations, how can they, in turn, convince governments to act on climate change.

E-Action of the week: Support James Hansen

This weeks e-ACTION is signing a petition to support James Hansen, the climate change researcher at the centre of yet another battle in the Republican war on science. Head of NASA's Goddard Institute, James was muzzled by senior-politically appointed-members of NASA. These modern day commissars have to be exposed for what they are. Sign this petition and make your voice heard!

e-Action of the Week

This weeks action online is more of a personal commitment than an action. I regularly listen to eco-talk radio which is one of the few good national radio shows about the environment, this often involves climate change.
